Born in what is now part of the Ukraine, Bergner was a star of the German and Austrian stage prior to the Nazi takeover. She received a nomination for the 1936 Best Actress Oscar, for the role of Gemma Jones in Escape Me Never. The film was directed by her husband, Paul Czinner. Now obscure, critic Alexander Woollcott once called her "probably the ablest living actress today."
