By far the wealthiest person in America at the time, and one of wealthiest of all time (adjusted for inflation), behind only Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Astor. Girard's wife, Mary Lum, was institutionalized in a lunatic asylum and he kept company with mistresses the remainder of his life. Upon his death Girard's will donated all his assets to charity, including the establishment of Girard College in Philadelphia, the boarding school where he is interred.
