Executive summary: German tape musician
Early member of the bands Tangerine Dream and later Kluster, credited with orienting them toward synthesizer-based music, though they generally became more melodic and ambient after his departure. In the 1970s and 80s he gave tape concerts conducted with multiple cassette decks loaded from a suitcase of his improvisations. Increasingly prolific, he produced dozens of releases up until his death and is grudgingly credited as an notable figure in the development of Krautrock.
Studied with both Karlheinz Stockhausen and Joseph Beuys.
