Missy ElliottAKA Melissa Elliott

Born: 1-Jul-1971
Birthplace: Portsmouth, VA

Gender: Female
Race or Ethnicity: Black
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Rapper

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Get Ur Freak On

One of the most prominent female rappers of all time, Missy "Misdemanor" Elliot got her start in the all-girl singing group Sista, who -- despite being signed to a record contract with Swing Mob Records in 1992 -- ceased to exist before releasing an album. Elliot then moved from performing to writing and producing, usually in collaboration with her long-time musical partner Timbaland. During the early 90s, her efforts provided successful songs for R&B singers such as Mariah Carey, Aaliyah and Whitney Houston.

After signing a deal with Elektra in 1997 to establish her own label (Gold Mind Records), and assisted by co-producer Timbaland, Missy began a solo career with the release of Supa Dupa Fly. The record was met with considerable success, helped in part by the attention attracted by the music video for the single The Rain -- the first in what has become a tradition of visually-inventive (and outright bizarre) videos by Elliot. The follow-up release, 1999s Da Real World, and her involvement that same year in the touring music festival Lilith Fair, both provided a little more glue to help secure Missy's star in the music firmament.

By the release of 2002's Under Construction, Elliot had established herself as not only a rap star, but as one of the top mainstream performers. Demand for her production talents reached a fever pitch, with Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Destiny's Child -- amongst many others -- enlisting her services. An inevitable result of such success, some unfortunate projects also materialized, such as commercial spots for sweatshop retailers The Gap and corporate monstrosity Coca-Cola. In contrast to these less savory ventures, Missy has also made public her own background of abuse as a spokesperson for Break The Cycle, an organization established to prevent domestic violence.
