Dennis Miller earned a BA in Journalism at Point Park College in Pittsburgh, PA. He worked in comedy and joined NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1985, where he anchored the show's satirical "Weekend Update" newscast for six years. His Dennis Miller Show, a late-night talkfest, quickly bombed in 1992. Dennis Miller Live debuted on HBO in 1994, and was among the pay channel's more popular features, with Miller's often-hilarious rants targeting hypocrites, liars, and the general idiots in charge. In the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Miller provided color commentary for ABC's Monday Night Football. It was an interesting albeit failed experiment, as Miller's esoteric musings sometimes clicked but more often clacked.
He's long described himself as a conservative libertarian, but Miller's comedy changed after September 11. The acerbic quips that once tended to question authority were largely eclipsed by angry calls for "roughing up" suspected terrorists or dropping bombs on Iraq. The new Miller is still funny, but presumably either HBO or the audience didn't care for the change, as Dennis Miller Live was canceled after the 2001-02 season. Miller now hosts Dennis Miller, a weekday political chat show on CNBC.
In a 2003 charity benefit in Las Vegas, Elton John took the stage immediately after Dennis Miller performed 20 minutes of right-tilting comedy. John sang "Tiny Dancer", then announced into the microphone, "Americans are always asking why the rest of the world hates them. Well, the reason is Dennis Miller. You've all gone mental if you liked that".
Pre-9/11 Miller comedy: "We are all but sailboats on the river of life, and money is the wind. With enough money, you can get blown anywhere."
Post-9/11 Miller comedy: "I would call the French scumbags, but that would be a disservice to bags filled with scum. I say we invade Iraq, then invade Chirac."
