After the coup of Pervez Musharraf, Rafiq Tarar was permitted to retain his position, the only constitutional official in Pakistan permitted to do so. This abruptly ended with Chief Executive's Order No. 2 of 2001, which modified the Proclamation of Emergency:

"The person holding the office of the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan immediately before the commencement of the Proclamation of Emergency (Amendment) Order, 2001, shall cease to hold the office with immediate effect."
Musharraf would soon assume this office as well. But by this point in time, the Presidency had already been reduced to that of a figurehead.
