He escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001, he remained a fugitive until he was arrested 21 February 2014 in Mazatlán as part of a joint operation by the Mexican Navy and the United States DEA. He escaped from that facility on 11 July 2015, via an elaborately engineered and clandestinely constructed tunnel. In October of the same year, the Mexican military surrounded his suspected compound in the Sierra Madre mountains and opened machine-gun fire from helicopters; Guzmán escaped again, although authorities believe he was injured.
