Co-Founder, with Edmond Safra, of Hermitage Capital Management, which in the late 1990s became one of the largest foreign investors in Russia. Both Hermitage and other Browder associates became victims of growing corruption in the country, and the company's offices were raided in 2007. The fruits of that raid allowed law enforcement officials to divert $230M in taxes due the Russian government into private hands. The man who had uncovered the corruption Hermitage attorney Sergei Magnitsky, was framed for the crime and murdered in prison. After lobbying by Browder, the U.S. Government passed the Magnitsky Act, which became law on 14 December 2012. It prohibits a list of individuals involved in the Magnitsky affair from entering the United States and allows for seizure of their assets.
