Considered a fine actor and a leading light in cinema's French New Wave, Jean-Paul Belmondo played D'Artagnan in a 1959 French TV adaptation of Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers), then leapt to international fame playing a sexy scoundrel in À double tour and its far more famous sequel, Breathless. Belmondo subsequently earned positive reviews in such art house fare as La Ciociara (released in America as Two Women), Le Doulos (The Finger Man), Stavisky..., and a non-singing adaptation of Hugo's Les Misérables. Interspersed with his more cerebral work, he also starred in several French action films, including Le Professionnel and L'Homme de Rio (That Man from Rio), and he had a tiny cameo in the 1967 Bond spoof Casino Royale. Through the 1970s and mid-80s, Belmondo was among the biggest box office stars in France. He has not worked and has rarely been seen in public since suffering a severe stroke in 2001.
