Army Brigadier General placed in charge of Abu Ghraib prison between June 2003 and April 2004. Very, very bad things happened during her tenure. She somehow allowed parts of the prison to be "off limits" even to her and all her personnel, only for the use of CIA and private interrogators. After photos of war crimes committed by US military in her prison were leaked, causing quite a frenzy of American hatred in the mideast, Karpinski was replaced by Major General Geoffrey D. Miller. She immediately began appearing on national news and talk shows wearing civilian garb, defending her position.

In June 2004, news broke that Karpinski had allegedly shoplifted a $22 bottle of perfume in October 2002 from the PX at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. She denied the allegation to CBS News, claiming that if any document to that effect ever surfaces it must be a forgery perpetrated to smear her.
