Gender: Male Religion: Christian [1] Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Religion, Radio Personality Nationality: United States Executive summary: Keeps predicting the end of world Harold Camping is founder and president of Family Stations, Inc., which owns and operates a network of over 50 mostly-FM radio stations, broadcasting exclusively Christian fundamentalist programming. Since 1961 he has hosted Open Forum, a live call-in talk show carried on his radio network. Among his teachings are that all organized churches are apostate, and that believers should abandon their church and form fellowships centered exclusively around Camping's theories.
A former civil engineer who fancies himself an eschatologist, in 1992 Camping gained some national attention when he predicted 6 September 1994 as the End of Days. As obviously this did not happen, in true Millerite tradition he announced in 2009 that the apocalypse would occur on 21 May 2011. As the date approached, Camping explained on his radio broadcasts that "without any shadow of a doubt" graves would open on that date, and some 200 million of the living and dead would float upwards to Heaven to meet and greet their Lord and savior.
Again his prediction was incorrect, and amid media reports of several suicides and murders related to his erroneous prophecy, Camping told reporters he was "somewhat bewildered" to have been wrong again. He then released a "recalculated" prediction, concluding, "Thus we can be sure that the whole world, with the exception of those who are presently saved (the elect), are under the judgment of God, and will be annihilated together with the whole physical world on October 21, 2011." A few days after that prophecy failed to come true, Camping retired from running Family Stations, Inc. [1] Member of the Dutch Reformed Church until 1988.
