In 1965, founded Gold's Gym in Venice Beach, California, the first such establishment dedicated to bodybuilding and the filming location of Arnold Schwarzenegger's film Pumping Iron. Women were banned, though this was later remedied after Gold decided that women "are better members than the guys. They don't stay all day, they don't stink and they pay on time." Gold has suffered a back injury during the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines, and was frequently confined to a wheelchair. While he sold the original gym itself in 1970, Gold returned to the business in 1977, founding World Gym with Gordon Mitchell, a chain he sold shortly before his death for an estimated $160M [Los Angeles Times.]
