Ingvar Kamprad established IKEA in 1943, when he was 17 years old. Of the company's four letter name, the first two letters are Kamprad's initials, and the next two stand for the family farm where he was raised (Elmtaryd) and the nearby town where he attended school (Agunnaryd). He has said that he got the idea for furniture that could be assembled and disassembled after he had trouble fitting a small table into the trunk of his car. He was reportedly a Nazi sympathizer during and after World War II, and has admitted to a recurring drinking problem. He drives a decade-old mid-priced Volvo, and lives in a modest home furnished almost entirely with IKEA furniture, which he says he assembled himself.
