Widely hailed as the successor to Itzhak Perlman as the wold's preeminent violinist, Joshua Bell was a child prodigy, and made his professional debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra when he was 14 years old. He has played with most of the world's finest symphonies, released more than two dozen CDs, performed violin solos in several movies, and won a Grammy in 2000. In a lighthearted stunt for the Washington Post in 2007, he performed as an anonymous busker at a public transit station in the nation's capital, collecting about $32 in his open violin case in less than an hour's playing.

Bell's father was a noted psychotherapist long associated with the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, and co-author of a landmark study debunking the notion that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
