Martin Shkreli

Born: 1-Apr-1983
Birthplace: Brooklyn, NY

Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White
Occupation: Business

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Vilified pharma executive

Starting as an associate in Jim Cramer's company, Shkreli later partnered with childhood friend Marek Biestek, using their initials to name MSMB Capital Management, a trading company. Shkreli and Biestek, and later Shkreli on his own, engaged in a series of securities-related activities that would later be called into question. He gained national notoriety as Turing Pharmaceuticals, a company designed to exploit patent-expired drugs. He took the patent-expired drug Daraprim, an anti-malarial now repurposed for AIDS patients, and raised the price per pill overnight from $13.50 to $750. Subsequent publicity and Shkreli's intransigence brought closer scrutiny into his activities, culminating in his arrest for securities fraud at the end of 2015.

On 24 November 2015, Shkreli purchased at auction for $2M the sole copy of the Wu-Tang Clan's album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. Under conditions of the sale, Wu-Tang is permitted to attempt one heist to recover the album. Shkreli claims not to have listened to his acquisition.
