Notorious for calling out the Arkansas National Guard in 1957 to prevent nine negro students from entering Little Rock Central High School. In response, Dwight D. Eisenhower sent Federal troops for force the issue. While losing the battle, his actions made him quite popular, winning the Governor's office in four subsequent elections.
