After giving up on being an actor, Treadwell devoted himself to the study of brown bears at Katmai National Park in southern Alaska. He became incredibly familiar with the bears he encountered, gaining their trust, camping near them, and naming them -- all the while ostensibly guarding them from poachers and the like -- and documenting it on videotape. When not among the bears he trod the lecture circuit from his home in Malibu, CA, promoting bear awareness to schoolgroups and on Letterman.

On 5 October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed when an unfamiliar bear attacked them. Partway through the attack, Treadwell's girlfriend got the video camera turned on (though the lens remained capped), and recorded the chompy assault as well as Treadwell's last words: "Get out here, I'm getting killed". The following day park rangers discovered the campsite. Two bears charged them, and were shot. An autopsy found bits of Treadwell's clothing inside them.
