Australian pediatrician Helen Caldicott is a long-time activist against nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and the use of "depleted" but still dangerously radioactive uranium in weapons. She served as President of Physicians for Social Responsibility from 1978-83, then left that group when she came to be perceived as more radical than many of its members. She has said that her initial interest in disarmament came after reading Nevil Shute's apocalyptic novel On the Beach in her early teens.
