Following a family tradition, Beatrix announced her abdication on 23 January 2013, in order to "place the responsibility for the country in the hands of a new generation." Her mother, Juliana, abdicated in 1980, and her grandmother, Wilhelmina, abdicated in 1948. Her decision makes the first male Dutch monarch in over 120 years. Upon abdication, her title reverts to HRH Princess Beatrix.
