TELEVISION CHANNEL

Founded 1977 by Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network as the CBN Satellite Service. In 1984 it became the CBN Cable Network; in 1988, the CBN Family Channel; and in 1990, The Family Channel when it was spun off from Robertson's nonprofit as International Family Entertainment. In 1997, the company was sold to Fox, Inc., and in 1998, renamed the Fox Family Channel. In 2001, Disney bought the channel along with related properties from Fox, and renamed the channel ABC Family. Badly mismanaged, it languished for a time until Disney began airing less family-appropriate programs as well as original programming, at which point ratings improved. Renamed in 2015, becoming Freeform.

Contractually, the channel is still required to carry Robertson's 700 Club.
