Pillsbury Winthrop was formed in 2001 by the merger of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro (founded 1874 in San Francisco, the city's oldest law firm) and Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts of New York City. The latter firm derives from Stimson, Putnam & Roberts, founded in 1868. In 2005 the company merged into Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman.
