Founded 1859 by chemist Alexander Clavel. The company was sold to Bindschedler & Busch in 1873, when it eventually became known as Chemische Industrie Basel, which was shortened in 1945 to Ciba. The firm merged with Geigy in 1971 to form pharmaceutical company Ciba-Geigy.
