COMPANY
Originally Southern Pacific Communications, part of Southern Pacific. Sold to GTE in 1983. Merged with US Telecom in 1986 to form US Sprint, and then purchased by that company's parent, United Telecom, in 1991. At this point the company changed its name from US Sprint to Sprint. After the 2005 purchase of Nextel it became Sprint Nextel.
