FAO Schwarz
COMPANY
Toy retailer, founded 1862 by Frederick A. O. Schwarz. At its height the company operated 40 retail stores. In trouble, FAO Schwarz was acquired by the Right Start Company in 2000, but that company filed for bankruptcy in 2002, emerged the following year, and filed again for bankruptcy in late 2003. The remnants were acquired by D. E. Shaw & Co. in 2004, then by Toys R Us in 2009. Several prominent locations remain open.
