Founded 1920 as the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd. Nationalized in 1947, privatized in the 1990's, with British Airways owning about 18% of the firm. In 2006, Qantas agreed to be acquired by a consortium, Airline Partners Australia, including Macquarie Bank and the Texas Pacific Group for $8.7B. An Australian law prohibits foreign ownership of Qantas above 49%.
