Private bank, founded 1818 by brothers George and John Brown in Philadelphia. The brothers were son of Alexander Brown, founder of Alex. Brown & Sons, formerly the oldest private bank in the United States. In 1931, Brown Bros & Co. merged with Harriman Brothers and Company to form Brown Brothers Harriman, which is still active.
