Burlington Northern

COMPANY

Formed 1970 by the multiple merger of 19th-century railroad baron James J. Hill's railroads: the Great Northern Railway, the Northern Pacific Railway, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. It acquired the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway in 1980. In 1988, it spun off Burlington Resources, as well as its trucking interests, to concentrate on railroads. Burlington Northern was merged into Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 1995.
