Founded 1917 as Sul Ross Normal College, after Lawrence Sullivan Ross (Governor of Texas 1887-91). Sul Ross opened its doors 14 June 1920, enrolling twenty-seven students. The name changed in 1949 to Sul Rose State College, and in 1969 to Sul Ross State University. It is part of the Texas State University system.
