EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

Founded 1833 as the Columbia Female Academy, changed 1856 to Columbia Female Baptist Academy. In the 1860's, James L. Stephens gave the college a $20,000 endowment, and the name was changed to Stephens Female College. It remains a women's college, though 6% of undergraduates are men.
