Founded 1887 as Croatan Normal School, it became Indian Normal School of Robeson County in 1911, Cherokee Indian Normal School of Robeson County in 1913, Pembroke State College for Indians in 1939, Pembroke State College in 1939, Pembroke State University in 1969, and University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1996.
