A gambling addict unable to come up with the requisite bet, leaves his daughter Martha Jane with bookie Sorrowful Jones as a collateral "marker": and Jones normally does not take markers. He loses the bet and commits suicide, leaving "Little Miss Marker" in the custody of Jones and the other bookies. Great Shirley Temple vehicle; this is her breakout role. Entered 1998 into the National Film Registry. The same story was remade as Sorrowful Jones (1949).
