Ash and his girlfriend Linda, vacationing in a forest cabin, inadvertently summon spirits of the dead after playing a tape of an archaeology professor reciting verses from the Necronomicon. Demons possess Linda and she loses her head. A group of archaeology students arrive and the gorefest continues. Titular sequel to The Evil Dead (1981), though actually a remake.

Sam Raimi: "If I had known it would be unrated, I think I would have hit a little harder with it. There wasn't initially a lot of pressure, but they did ask us to deliver an R-rated picture; that was one of the conditions of the funding. That was really what we tried to do, and I guess we failed. I guess I don't know how to make an R-rated picture."
