A precocious mouse with identity issues works to rescue his kingdom's Princess after she is kidnapped.

Despereaux is a mouse unlike any other in his whimsical little society, enamored with the contents of books instead of eating them and unafraid of larger creatures existing in the outside world. Ejected from his mouse-filled realm as a result of his refusal to conform, Despereaux befriends a rat named Roscuro, only to find his best friend -- Pea, the Princess of their kingdom -- kidnapped after she disapproves of their friendship. Now, Despereaux must call upon his own unusual sense of bravery by taking up arms as a pint-sized knight with a view to rescuing Pea and saving the day.
