The story of Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel under commission of Pope Julius II, filmed as epic spectacle. Michelangelo considers himself a sculptor and does not want the work; he makes a false start and changes the subject matter from the 12 Apostles to the Old Testament. The act of painting wrecks him physically, and there is question as to whether he can finish before approaching Franco-German forces sack the city.
