Ruth, wanting to be a writer, and her sister Eileen, wanting to be an actress, move into the noisiest basement apartment in New York City; the former tenant was a streetwalker. A cavalcade of strange characters present themselves, up to and including the Portuguese Navy. Includes probably the best triple-cameo in any movie ever. Based on the successful Broadway play which was purportedly based on the real-life adventures of Ruth and Eileen McKenney. Rosalind Russell received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
