Greta Garbo, in her second talkie, plays an Italian opera diva who falls in love with a priest. Any hope of marriage is off when he discovers that she had been mistress to a wealthy man. The story is related in flashback when the priest (at this point now a bishop) gives advice to his grandson when he desires to marry an actress. Received Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Director.
