Wanting a better life for his daughter Tess, peasant farmer John Durbeyfield sends her to stay with the d'Urberville family, from whom they are distantly related. She is treated badly and harbors a shameful secret, but finds apparent happiness when she marries a missionary. Probably the best adaptation of Hardy's tragic novel. Won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Set Decoration, and Best Costume Design; received additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score.
