Sam Bowden is a small-town lawyer who testified against Max Cady, resulting in a rape conviction and 8 years of imprisonment. Cady took the opportunity to carefully study law, knowledge he uses to terrorize Bowden's family while still remaining technically within his legal rights. He takes particular interest in Bowden's 12-year-old daughter. Dark and suspenseful; very controversial in 1962, it required numerous edits to make it past certification. Remade by Martin Scorsese as Cape Fear (1991).
