ABSTRACT
Murphy "Barfi" Johnson, a deaf-mute young man from Darjeeling, is a troublemaker who gets his kicks from playing practical jokes on unsuspecting locals. He falls in love with a new arrival to town and finds his feelings reciprocated, but ultimately cut off by his hopeful lover's mother's prejudices against his disabilities; later on, however, when Barfi must embark on a treacherous adventure to raise money for his ill father's medical treatment, he finds himself revisiting old memories and troubles.
