ABSTRACT
Florence Cathcart, a journalist in 1921 England whose attempts to cope with the death of her lover in World War I led to her becoming an authority on debunking matters 'spiritual' and 'paranormal', is called to a boarding school following complaints about a terrifying "child ghost" scaring students to death. Expecting to make short work of the situation, the arrogant and self-confident Florence slowly begins to realize that all may indeed not be as it seems -- and very possibly beyond comprehensible rationalization -- as her time at the school lumbers on.
