Cabiria, prostitute on the streets of Rome since age 15, finds herself frequently taken advantage of by men though has somehow achieved a modicum of self-sufficiency and managed to own her own house. Yet she never seems to find happiness in the unforgiving city. Initially we are unsympathetic to Cabiria or her plight, but as the film progresses, this changes. Masterpiece. Won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
