The founding of the modern state of Israel. As Jewish people flee Europe, they found themselves unwelcome and detained by various governments. The first portion tells the story of some 600 refugees in Cyprus trying to reach Palestine. The second half, turmoil within the British Mandate as Zionists struggle for an independent state. Long and overwrought. Won an Oscar for Best Dramatic Score; received additional nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography.
