Lavish treatment of Tolstoy's epic novel, but with terrible sound as it was shot in Italy. Fonda is miscast, and Ferrer seemingly not competent; Herbert Lom is the only one who seems properly placed. Despite deep flaws, a worthy attempt. Received Oscar nomination for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design.
