William Shakespeare undertakes the writing of Romeo and Ethel, the Pirates Daughter; he meets Lady Viola, dressed as a boy so that she can join the cast of the play as Romeo. And though Viola is engaged to Lord Wessex, she commences a torrid affair with the young Shakespeare. But this cannot last, as she knows she must return to Wessex whom she does not love. Won 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Leading and Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay; received 6 additional nominations including Best Director and Best Supporting Actor.
