A German law student comes face to face with a former love interest at a post-World War II war-crimes trial.
Michael Berg, a teenager living in post-war Germany, falls ill with scarlet fever on a trip home one dreary day. Brought home and nursed back to health by Hanna, an attractive woman twice his age, the young Michael embarks on a curious romance, acting on their mutual passion for classic literary works to fan the flames of a blossoming love; Hanna's eventual mysterious disappearance sets the stage for a tale about unexpected confrontations under undesirable circumstances, as Michael does not run into her again until he is working at a law student at a hearing for war-crimes charges she is on trial for some years later.
