Chris McNeil's 12-year-old daughter Regan is possessed by a powerful evil. At first, Fr. Karras, priest and psychiatrist, tried to convince her otherwise, but eventually he realizes he is in over his head. Called in is Fr. Merrin, an exorcist who earlier was present at a Sumerian archaeological excavation which may have unearthed an ancient evil, the demon Pazuzu. Landmark horror film, highly original for 1973 and still never equaled in its subject area. Won Oscars for Best Sound and Best Screenplay; nominated for 8 others including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Director. Soundtrack is Mike Oldfield's classic instrumental Tubular Bells.
