A dishwasher flees his small Texas town to become a prostitute in New York City; he is ill-suited for this type of work. He meets Ratso and they plan to head for Florida. Won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adaptation; received additional nominations for Best Actor (two), Best Supporting Actress, and Best Editing. It is the only X rated film to have won Best Picture. When re-released in 1980 without any edits, it received an R rating. Entered 1994 into the National Film Registry.
