A high school baseball coach makes good on a promise made to his team by trying out as a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

ABSTRACT
Jim Morris, middle-aged Texas high school chemistry teacher moonlighting as the coach of his school's baseball team, agrees to try out for a professional club if his squad wins the state championship; they do so, compelling an impressed Jim to be a man of his word and follow through on his promise. Jim winds up at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' training camp, armed with the reappearance of a killer fastball that had eluded him since college as he blazes an unlikely trail all the way to a regular-season pitching appearance against none other than the Texas Rangers.
