Two elderly spinsters in a Jutland village, in remote 19th century Denmark, have largely sacrificed their lives to tend to their father and his Protestant flock. They take in Babette, a Catholic French refugee, her family killed in the strife of the Paris Commune; she serves as their maid and cook. After some years, Babette wins the lottery and it is apparent she will return to France. She asks the sisters to allow her to prepare a magnificent meal in celebration of the 100th anniversary of their father's birth. Won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
