Wartime lovers are separated, and musician Christine Radcliffe believes cellist Karel Novak to have been killed. Upon return to New York she becomes the kept woman of composer Alexander Hollenius. When Novak shows up in New York by chance, Christine tries to keep their past history a secret from Hollenius. Claude Rains as Hollenius in particular turns in an excellent performance in this stylish noir melodrama.
